Project description

The Victoria and Albert Design Museum is the new landmark of the Scottish city of Dundee. Where the Arc de Triomphe previously stood in the harbour area, the Design Museum now juts into the River Tay like a ship's hull.
The building, designed by the "star architect" Kengo Kuma, animates the observer to ever new analogies in its appearance. Sometimes it is compared in the press to a ship's hull, sometimes as two upside-down pyramids.

In order to turn the architect's ideas into reality, MODERSOHN® manufactured well over 17,500 Fastening elements, mostly made of standard and Lean Duplex steel, for the exterior façade. The anchoring elements, which are still visible in the installed state, were even integrated visually into the design of the façade as custom-made products. The custom-made serrated anchor channel and the MOSO® anchor channel MBA-CE, which is already permanently approved according to the latest European Technical Assessment (ETA) based on the European Assessment Document (EAD), were also used.

The climatic influences, due to the proximity of the building to the sea, required higher Corrosion resistance in the choice of material and thus offered a special challenge for MODERSOHN. Due to the special post-processing by means of pickling and electropolishing, the company succeeded in increasing the Corrosion resistance of the Lean Duplex steel by one class. A circumstance that was additionally proven for this special area of application by an expert opinion of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing.
