Detailview for term

Stainless steel

Stainless steel or rust-free steel have the same meaning and mean a stainless high-alloy steel material with a minimum of 10.5% chromium and a maximum of 1.2% carbon, within the range of stainless steels. However, the term stainless is to be understood as a value term under normal atmospheric conditions.
In order to prevent corrosion, the stainless steel needs additional oxygen and moisture from the environment to form the protective passive layer (chromium oxide, chromium hydroxide layer). Of course, there are applications and environmental influences which also cause (less alloyed) stainless steels to corrode.

It is therefore always important to seek expert advice on the more than 120 different types of stainless steel currently available.
Please contact MODERSOHN for further information. Mr. Wilhelm Modersohn (member of the board of the Information Centre for Stainless Steel in the Steel Centre in Düsseldorf) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolf-Berend Busch (chairman of the board of DVS Westfalen) can answer your questions (preferably by email).
