Project description

The Modersohn company planned and manufactured a new show boiling pan for the former salt works in Bentlage, which belonged to the town of Rheine.
The "Verein zur Förderung der Saline Gottesgabe e.V." (Association for the Promotion of the Gottesgabe Salt Works), founded in 2010, commissioned the pan, which weighs a good 126 kg, measures 100 x 150 cm and has a depth of 35 cm. It holds 350 litres of brine and serves as a replacement for the first tub of this kind, which was ceremoniously inaugurated at the opening of the Schausiede Pavilion in October 2017.
Since then, it has been in operation as part of guided tours or events to illustrate the salt boiling craft to visitors.
However, this first tub was made of standard steel 1.4301 and was therefore highly susceptible to corrosion.
At the start of the 2022 season, the replacement with a new tub was therefore unavoidable.

Special challenges

Brine is an extremely aggressive liquid that attacks even high-grade metals in case of permanent contact.
For this reason, only a highly corrosion-resistant material was considered for the new tank.
For this reason, managing director and Stainless steel expert Wilhelm Modersohn recommended the material 1.4547, a fully austenitic steel of Corrosion resistance class V, to the 1st chairman of the sponsoring association, Mr Jules Vleugels.

Material

For the custom-made tank, the solid austenite 1.4547 with very strong Corrosion resistance properties was used.
It was also crucial that the weld seams were welded liquid-tight from the inside and outside and also cleaned and pickled.
A leak test was carried out according to DIN EN ISO 3452-1.
