As the old fire station on the Oberland was outdated and there were no options for expansion, the general planning for the new Helgoland fire station was put out to tender in a Europe-wide tendering process.
The winning design by architects Gössler Kinz Kerber Schippmann Architekten PartG mbH not only includes plenty of space for the fire department, but also capacity for the rescue service and police on a total of approx. 2,500 square meters.
Construction work began in 2021 and was completed in autumn 2024.
On October 6, 2024, the new premises were presented to the public as part of an open day.
The fire station building has four vehicle bays, changing rooms for 50 people and a training room, as well as a breathing apparatus training room, an emergency kitchen and a radio station.
In addition, the youth fire department, formerly based at the Unterland fire station, has moved here.
The rescue service has a parking space and premises in the right-hand part of the building.
The island's police force will find its new home in another building to the left, with around 500 square metres of space for offices, the identification service and a custody cell.
Six apartments for on-duty firefighters and the rescue service as well as a rehearsal room for the Helgoland marching band have also been created on the upper floor of the building.
