Project description

Time and cost savings during the renovation of the supporting structure at the Volksbühne Rosa Luxemburg thanks to Lean duplex Stainless steel components from the Modersohn production.

As is well known, the "ravages of time" unfortunately do not stop at art.

However, stopping it does not necessarily have to be long and cost-intensive: In the course of the renovation of the traditional Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin, Modersohn was able to show, that by using alternative materials and targeted engineering, considerable savings and reductions in delivery times are possible.

Damage symptoms

The existing steel construction was severely affected by corrosion over the time, which meant that the stability of the architrave stones, the architrave soffit and the natural stone facade above the main portal could no longer be guaranteed.

The steel lintel girders in the lateral wall openings were also corroded to such an extent that only a replacement was possible.

Troubleshooting

The HEB 160 made of material 1.4571 required by the structural engineer could be replaced by an innovative solution with a self-produced profile made of Stainless steel 1.4362 (Lean Duplex). In close cooperation with the client, additional assembly time was saved in addition to the more than 20% cost saving on material. The solution we suggested, to cut the necessary oblong holes in the carrier profiles already in the workshop using a laser into the material (instead of drilling on the construction site), was gratefully accepted by the customer. Thus, a cost-conscious, practical solution was created here, which enabled lower material and time expenditure for delivery and installation.

Material

For the new supporting structure, we only used components made of stainless Lean Duplex steel.

  •     For the supporting structure of the architrave above the main portal.
  •     For the lintel beams at the lateral wall openings.
  •     As suspensions for the architrave.
