Project description

280 years of contemporary history are contained in the building of the State Opera House on Unter den Linden. In the change of times, this statement applies extremely appropriately to the imposing building, which was built in the rococo style from 1741-1743 by Georg Wenzeslaus von Kobelsdorff. For a good 100 years later, the State Opera burned down to its foundation walls. It was immediately rebuilt according to the plans of the architect Carl Ferdinand Langhaus. Further reconstruction work by the architect Otto Hodler followed in the years 1926-27.
During World War II, however, the State Opera suffered serious damage as a result of two air raids. After World War II, the State Opera remained a ruin for a long time. It was not until 1951 that the decision was made to rebuild the building and it was reopened in 1954 under the direction of Richard Paulick. Later renovation plans proved to be extremely controversial and difficult after the turn of the millennium. In 2009, after a second call for tenders, the Stuttgart architectural firm HG Merz was awarded the contract for the object planning. Another eight years passed until the reopening of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden on 3rd of October 2017.

Special challenges

During the renovation work, structural deficiencies of the opera house were eliminated and the severely outdated building equipment was brought up to contemporary safety standards.

For example, accessibility, air-conditioning technology and fire protection were improved.

During the renovation work, great importance was attached to being able to recognise later where something new had been added, but also to maintaining the historical appearance of the opera house.

The company MODERSOHN®, known for its specialisation in the field of custom-made Stainless steel products for the renovation of old buildings and monuments, supplied cornice fastening parts and Support brackets made of the material 1.4571 Stainless steel for the reconstruction work.
