Project description

Special designs for the restoration of the Dresden Frauenkirche. Modersohn manufactured special parts which give the historical building lasting stability. The more than eleven-metre long "Kaiserstab" made of Stainless steel carries the loads of the tower bonnet.
Known as the "Stone Bell", the dome of the Frauenkirche was once the crowning glory of Dresden's city skyline and a magnificent architectural achievement.

Special challenges

In order to absorb the loads of the reconstructed tower dome and transfer them via the wooden construction, the "ARGE Frauenkirche" (Working Group for the Frauenkirche) commissioned the development of the square tube called "Kaiserstab" (Emperor's rod). Its manufacturing challenged the Modersohn welding experience: the large dimensions and the permanent swaying of the component at a height of 80 m caused by wind forces demanded the highest precision. For maximum Corrosion resistance, all welded fastening parts and those folded from sheet metal were made of Stainless steel 1.4571 (A5).

The production was supervised by Modersohns employee Prof. Dr. Wolf-Berend Busch. He is a welding engineer and specialist for material and Joining Technology. The emperor's rod is the largest component Modersohn produced for the Frauenkirche. The company also supplied retaining and supporting structures for the masonry, from heavy tensile anchors to needle anchors.
