Project description

The approximately 135 million euro new building on the historical ground plan of the former Knobelsdorff's city palace was built according to the plans of the Dresden architect Prof. Dr. Peter Kulka - with reconstruction of the outer facades - and was officially opened in January 2014. It houses one of the most modern state parliament buildings in Germany.

In his speech, the president of the state parliament, Gunter Fritsch, said: "After 22 years of provisional accommodation, the members of parliament have literally moved closer to the citizens with this location. The reconstruction of the façade has closed a wound in the heart of the city of Potsdam".

The prestigious building has a usable floor space (including an underground car park) of around 19,000 square metres. The plenary hall is located on the 1st floor, the central location of the building.

Background information

"Risen from the ruins": New building of the state parliament in Potsdam with fortification consoles by MODERSOHN.

In 2005, the state parliament of Brandenburg decided to have the new state parliament building erected on the Alter Markt in Potsdam's city centre - on the old site of the city palace, which was demolished in GDR times. The almost 35,000 square meter new state parliament building is located in the immediate vicinity of the Old Town Hall, the Nikolai Church and the Havel. The old castle had been destroyed by a bombing raid in the last days of the war, and the ruins were demolished in 1959/60 on the orders of SED leader Walter Ulbricht.

Material

The sandstone for the sandstone walls, which are modelled on the contemporary style, comes - as was the case with the original castle - from a quarry in Saxony: it is the well-known "medium-grain Reinhardtsdorf sandstone", which was supplied by the Saxon Sandstone Works in Pirna.

The facades were rebuilt according to the historical model, using the right materials and works. Existing original parts of the castle were included. The attics of the outer facades were constructively prepared for the installation of the existing figurative jewellery or that to be produced according to the historical model. The substructure consists of specially manufactured fastening brackets from M-CUSTOM.
