Interesting facts about stainless steel

WHY STAINLESS STEEL?

Long-lasting and high stability

Wherever durability and particular expectations on stability and material neutrality are imposed over years, stainless steels are the first choice. Examples: construction of sewage disposal systems, environmental engineering for hazardous substances, the food industry, fixings and facings.

Attractive and design capable optical properties

Architects and designers have long-since elected the nonrusting material range to "design steel". These days design elements made of Stainless steel have become indispensable for almost all basic commodities, building components and service facilities. Some terms are indicative of the aesthetics of steel: brilliant and shiny - slim and elegant - strong and functional.

Environmental benefits in the production of stainless steel

Compared to competing materials such as e.g. plastic, aluminum, etc., steels and especially stainless steels are particularly environmentally friendly. This begins with a significantly better energy and resource balance in the production and ends with the better recyclability and use in the raw material circulation. Choosing Stainless steel is a decisive step towards a better and more livable environment.

High stabilty and toughness

Not for nothing has Building Research Institute in Berlin BAM (our supreme planning authority) declared Stainless steel material no. 1 when it comes to major support and fixing situations in building construction. Thanks to material forming Corrosion-proof steel becomes harder, one speaks of strain hardening. And yet stainless steels remains tough without breaking from sudden impacts.

Into the future with new materials, example "Lean Duplex"

Already in 2002, even before the big wave of price increases for Stainless steel, we started to investigate new high-performance stainless steels.
In 2006, we were already able to obtain building authority approval for the SAF2304 for all fixings in the building industry with no. Z-30.3.19.

The advantages of Lean Duplex steel, e.g. Wst. 1.4362 compared to 1.4571 (A5) or 1.4404 (A4L) can be summarised as listed in the descriptions below.

Why Lean-duplex steel?
  • More planning security: significantly lower alloy content of nickel and molybdenum, thus cheaper and higher price stability due to relatively lower alloy surcharges
  • Twice as high basic strength, even in a welded condition
  • Better corrosion resistance against chloride-induced stress cracking and pitting amongst others
  • Lower thermal expansion at the same thermal conductivity
  • More favorable fatigue strength
  • Higher E-modulus values than austenitic structures
